Orator (1999)

The film shows the establishment of Soviet rule in Uzbekistan through the life of one patriarchal Muslim family. Iskander, a simple and kind-hearted man, lives happily with his wives until the revolution and civil war bring new duties: the new authorities need his gift for public speaking, and a further, secret wife enters his life. The story is narrated by Iskander's son. It is the feature-length directing debut of Yusup Razykov, made at the Uzbekfilm studio, and it received awards for screenplay and visual design at the national Bukhara-99 festival.
