Biography

Anna Ivanovna Glushenkova was born on 1 August 1926 in the village of Matyshevo in the Rudnya district of the Volgograd region. In 1948 she graduated from the Central Asian Industrial Institute in Tashkent (now Tashkent State Technical University) and completed postgraduate study there.

Her research concerned the chemistry and technology of natural compounds, above all plant fats and lipids. From the late 1960s the journal “Chemistry of Natural Compounds” carried her papers on the hydrogenation of fats, cottonseed oil, gossypol and the complex processing of cotton seed, some written with A. L. Markman, S. Yu. Yunusov and A. U. Umarov. She became a Doctor of Chemical Sciences in 1972 and a professor in 1982.

She headed a department at the Tashkent Polytechnic Institute. From 1983 she led a laboratory at the Institute of the Chemistry of Plant Substances of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan, and in 1984–1989 she was the institute’s director. She was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Uzbek SSR in 1984 and a full member (academician) of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan in 2000, and she sat on the Academy’s presidium.

She wrote more than four hundred scientific articles, books and monographs. She served as deputy editor-in-chief of “Chemistry of Natural Compounds” and trained dozens of candidates and doctors of science.

In 1996 she was named Honoured Science Worker of Uzbekistan, and she also received the Order of Friendship of Peoples and the Order “Mehnat shuhrati”. Anna Glushenkova died in Tashkent on 18 April 2017.
