Biography
From.UZ is a progressive rock band formed in Tashkent in 2004. The name comes from one of the band's early songs and means “from Uzbekistan”.
The founders were guitarist Vitaly Popeloff, bassist Andrew Mara-Novik, drummer Vladimir Badirov and keyboardist Albert Khalmurzaev. Mara-Novik and Badirov left in 2008. Popeloff remains the central figure of the band.
Critics describe the music as mostly instrumental, in the styles of progressive rock and jazz fusion.
The first joint project was the ballet “Sodom and Gomorra XXI”, composed by Khalmurzaev for the Youth Theatre of Uzbekistan. In 2007 the band released its concert at that theatre as the live album “Audio Diplomacy”, and the same year it played the Baja Prog festival in Mexico. In 2009 it opened the ceremony of the first Uzbek rock music awards, IOSIS Fest.
Studio albums: Overlook (2008), Seventh Story (2010), Quartus Artifactus (2011) and Sodom and Gomorra (2013). Concert DVDs followed in 2007 and 2010.
In 2009 the band recorded a cover of King Crimson's “Starless and Bible Black”.
