Biography

Sunnatulla Anorboyev was born on 9 September 1922 in the village of Qarnoq near the city of Turkistan (today in Kazakhstan). He attended an incomplete secondary school and then a teachers’ technical school in Namangan.

He served in the Second World War in 1942–1945. After the war he completed his studies at the Tashkent State Pedagogical Institute, graduating in 1946, and worked as a teacher. From 1949 he began to publish regularly in republican newspapers and journals, at first sketches, articles and essays.

His first book, “Hikoyalar” (Stories), appeared in 1957, followed by the collection “Oqsoy shalolalari” (1958) and the novel “Oqsoy” (1961), which was translated into Russian and other languages. His career was closely tied to the journal Sharq yulduzi and the Gafur Gulom Literature and Art Publishing House.

Anorboyev’s works dwell on life in the highland pastures and on the hunt, the daily life of shepherds and the protection of nature. Besides books for adults, his children’s tale “To‘rtko‘zning boshidan kechirganlari” (1962) became very popular and was reissued many times; stories such as “Bahs” and “Qo‘rqoq” entered primary-school readers. Later came the novel “Sayli” (1979) and “Suzib borar arxarlar” (1982).

For his services to literature he received the title Honoured Cultural Worker of the Uzbek SSR in 1973 and the Order “El-yurt hurmati” in 1999. Sunnatulla Anorboyev died in Tashkent on 30 March 2003.
