Biography
Yuriy Gennadyevich Shipulin was born on 13 February 1943 in Chimbay (Karakalpak ASSR) into a white-collar family. After school he entered the Tashkent Polytechnic Institute in 1961 to study electric networks and systems.
He began working in 1962 as an electrician at TashGorEMU and served in the Soviet Army from 1964 to 1967. He completed his studies in 1970 in automation and telemechanics.
He stayed on at the institute: first as an assistant at the department of fundamentals of radio electronics and head of a laboratory, then as an assistant and associate professor at the department of automation and telemechanics. He defended his candidate’s dissertation in 1984 and his doctoral dissertation in 2007, and since 2008 has been a professor at the department of automation and control, later renamed the department of intelligent engineering systems. The university, successor to the polytechnic institute, is named after Islam Karimov.
His research covers optoelectronic displacement transducers based on fibre-optic and hollow light guides, and the automation of technological processes. In 2013 he was one of the authors of a paper on an optoelectronic transducer for automatic measurement of displacements and dimensions (Mir izmereniy), and in 2020, with T. Abdullaev, he published a review of intelligent optoelectronic displacement transducers (Universum: Technical Sciences).
As a supervisor and consultant he has guided dissertations: by his own account, three candidates defended candidate’s dissertations under him, and in 2022 T. Abdullaev defended a PhD dissertation under his supervision. His list of works comprises about 250 titles, including 4 monographs, 4 textbooks and 18 patents and inventor’s certificates; the results of several projects have been adopted in Uzbek industry.
