The film is set in 1918, when a decree by Lenin founds the first university in Central Asia, the Turkestan People's University in Tashkent. Professors and teachers arrive from Moscow and Petrograd while local young people hurry to enrol, and all must overcome postwar ruin and the resistance of wealthy landowners, clergy and foreign agents. At its centre is Saodat, the first woman student, who casts off the paranja. It was directed by Latif Fayziev at the Tashkent film studio in 1957.
