Biography
Islom Shoir Nazar o'g'li was born in 1874 in the Narpay district of the Samarkand region, into a family of farmers and herders. His grandfather Rajab Shoir was also a bakhshi and taught him to play the dombira and to perform termas and dastans.
He named Ernazar Bakhshi among his teachers and also learned from Jumanbulbul and Tukhtamish Shoir, absorbing the methods of the Kurgan and Shahrisabz dastan schools. He is regarded as a representative of the Narpay dastan school.
His repertoire included dastans of the Alpomish, Kuntugmish and Goroghli cycles, as well as “Orzigul”, “Gulixiromon”, “Ravshanxon” and “Yakka Ahmad”; in all he knew about thirty dastans. He also sang poems by Makhtumkuli, Berdak and Mashrab.
Under Soviet rule he turned to new themes as well: during the war he was known for the collections “Jangnoma” (1941) and “Qahramonnoma” (1942) praising the courage of Uzbek soldiers. His selected works were published in Tashkent in 1953, and O. Sobirov devoted a monograph to his life and work (1967).
Islom Shoir died on 17 July 1953. A street and a school in the Narpay district bear his name, and the centenary of his birth was marked in 1975.
