Biography

Olimjon Xoldor (born Xoldorov) was born on 18 September 1932 in the village of Kulla in the Buloqboshi district of the Andijan region. He studied at a teacher-training school in Andijan and then graduated from the Fergana State Pedagogical Institute in 1952.

He began as a schoolteacher, later became an editor at the regional radio in Andijan (from 1960) and worked as a newspaper correspondent. From 1968 to 1983 he headed the Andijan regional branch of the Writers’ Union of Uzbekistan.

His literary career dates from the 1960s: his first poetry collection, “Under the Argʻuvon Tree” (“Argʻuvon tagida”), appeared in 1965 under the editorship of Mirtemir. Later books include “The Beauty of Andijan”, “Spring of Andijan”, “The Silver Bowl”, “Child of the Earth”, “Make the Circle Wider” and “Touch Wood”. He also wrote lyrical-epic poems such as “I Am Andijan”, “The Sky of Andijan” and “Roz”. More than a hundred of his ghazals have been set to music, and many are sung as songs.

He wrote for the stage as well: the plays “Who Is the Killer?”, “The Legend of Love” and “Lola” were staged, and he wrote the children’s play “Boboruh”. After independence he turned to prose, publishing the novella “Heart” (“Koʻngil”, 1992), the novels “Arosat” (1993) and “Mirkomilboy” (1998), and the novel “Miracle”.

In 1992 he was given the title Honoured Art Worker of Uzbekistan.
