Biography
Qodir Bakhshi (real name Abdi Rahimov) was born on 16 April 1937 in the village of Chalka in the Dehqonobod district of the Qashqadarya region. “Qodir” was his bakhshi pen name.
He first learned the craft from his grandfather, Turdi Bakhshi, and later became a pupil of Umir Shoir, the son of the poet Safar. He began performing as an independent bakhshi at 18.
His repertoire included about 70 dastans, among them “Alpomish”, “Yodgor”, “Kuntug'mish”, “Shirin and Shakar”, “Rustam”, “Yusuf and Zulayho”, “Zaydinoy” and “Shohidnoma”; he also knew many folk tales and legends. Very few of the dastans he knew were recorded.
He is regarded as a major figure of the Dehqonobod dastan school, and his voice reached audiences abroad. A school and cultural centres in Qashqadarya bear his name, a memorial house museum was set up in Dehqonobod, and his pupils and children carry on the tradition.
Qodir Bakhshi died on 29 August 1986, aged 49.
