Biography
Tursunoy Saidazimova was born in 1911 in Tashkent and was one of the first Uzbek actresses. From 1924 to 1927 she studied at the three-year Uzbek theatre studio attached to the Uzbek House of Enlightenment in Moscow, as a pupil of the poet and playwright Hamza Hakimzade Niyazi; sources say they met in Tashkent in 1926 and that he persuaded her to take part in opera.
From 1927 until her death she was an actress of the Uzbek State Theatre, adding songs to many productions; colleagues called her «the Uzbek nightingale». She was among the first women to perform on stage without a veil.
In 1928, in Bukhara, aged about 17, she was killed by her husband, who stabbed her for having «dishonoured the family». Hamza dedicated the poem «On the Death of Tursunoy» to her; he himself was killed a year later in a village of the Fergana Valley. Her name is still remembered in the history of the Uzbek theatre.
