Zafar Khashimov

Zafar Khashimov was born on 29 June 1968 in Tashkent. He graduated in 1992 from Tashkent State University (now the National University of Uzbekistan) in probability theory and mathematical statistics, and then studied at the University of Sussex in England.

In 1992–1995 he was general director of UzEX LLC, and in 1995–1997 business development director at the distributor Balton Trading (Asia).

In December 1996 he founded the Anglesey Food brand; the first store opened in 1997. In 2005 the chain was rebranded as korzinka.uz. Korzinka is now one of the country's largest food retail chains, with more than 190 stores in 12 regions (per Wikipedia).

His other ventures include the CityTaxi service (2012), REDTAG Uzbekistan (2013), the country's first multi-brand store of Turkish footwear brands FLO (2018) and the Five food court (2019). Kapital.uz also names him a co-founder of Newmax Technologies (MyTaxi, Express24 and other projects).

In 2019–2020 the EBRD agreed to invest up to US$40 million in Anglesey Food (the agreement was signed in February 2020; the aim was to grow from 50 to 140 supermarkets by 2025). In May 2020 he became a co-founder and board of trustees member of TEAM University in Tashkent, the country's first entrepreneurial university.

He is also known for public comment: he gives interviews on tax policy, reforms and entrepreneurship, in 2019 he commented on a proposal to lower the VAT rate, and in March 2020 he dismissed rumours that bananas spread the coronavirus. He keeps the Telegram channel @HappyZK. He was awarded the Order of Friendship in August 2021; according to Wikipedia, he received the title Honored Entrepreneur of the Republic of Uzbekistan in 2025.
