Biography
Abdullatif Khan belonged to the Shaybanid dynasty and was a son of Kuchkunji Khan. The year of his birth is uncertain: some sources give 1495, others differ.
In 1537–1538 he took part in Ubaydullah Khan’s campaign against Khorezm. After Ubaydullah’s death in 1540, power passed briefly to another of Kuchkunji’s sons, Abdullah Khan I, and then Abdullatif became the ruler of Samarkand.
In Bukhara ruled Ubaydullah’s son Abd al-Aziz Khan, who did not recognise Abdullatif’s authority. The Shaybanid state thus had two centres of power, with disputes settled by the Juybari shaykhs; the division lasted until the mid-1550s.
Sources describe Abdullatif as a connoisseur of the history of Transoxiana and of the Shaybanid line and as a patron of poets and scholars; he himself wrote verse under the pen name Khush. During his reign Uzbek was used in official documents alongside Persian.
In 1551 he marched on Karmana together with Nawruz Ahmad, the ruler of Tashkent; the attack was repelled. Abdullatif died in Samarkand in 1551 (1552 in some sources) and was buried beside his father. Samarkand then passed to Nawruz Ahmad (Baraq Khan), who was proclaimed supreme khan. Two sons of Abdullatif are known, Abdulsultan and Gadai Khan.
