Biography
Bujugha Khan (also Bujuga) belonged to the Arabshahids, the branch of the Shaybanids descended from Yadgar Khan that ruled Khorezm in the 16th century; he was a son of Aminek Khan. From 1511 power in Khorezm was held by Ilbars Khan and his kin, and later the throne passed to the sons of Aminek Khan, who shared Khiva, Hazarasp, Kat and other towns between them.
The year and place of his birth are not reliably known. He became khan after his brother Sufyan Khan. Russian-language scholarship dates his reign to 1522–1526; Western editions based on the published Khorezmian chronicle of Munis and Agahi give different dates in the later 1520s. All dates of his reign are therefore approximate.
Under him the Khorezmians kept up their campaigns against Safavid Iran. The Bukharan ruler Ubaydullah Khan was at war with Shah Tahmasp, while Khorezmian detachments raided the border towns of Khorasan. Tahmasp, also busy with the Ottomans, sought peace with the Uzbeks.
According to the sources, the shah asked for the hand of Bujugha Khan’s daughter. The khan had no daughters and offered his niece instead, Aisha-begim, the daughter of his brother Sufyan Khan. His brother Aghish Sultan was sent to settle the terms. After that the raids on Khorasan stopped.
Bujugha Khan died in 1526 (by other accounts, later). Power passed to his brother Avanesh Khan. His sons were Dust Muhammad (Dost Khan), Ish Muhammad and Burum; Dost Khan later ruled Khorezm himself, and the chronicle “Tarikh-i Dost Sultan” is named after him.
