Biography
Musa Khan was one of the khans who ruled Khorezm (Khiva) at the turn of the eighteenth century. He belonged to the Arabshahid branch of the Shibanid dynasty and, according to reference works, was a son of Jochi Sultan, who had been khan in 1694–1697. His year and place of birth have not survived.
Khans followed one another quickly in Khiva in those years: within a few years the throne was held by Shahniyaz, Shahbakht, Sayid Ali and others. After Sayid Ali Khan was removed, Musa took the throne. The years of his reign differ between lists: Uzbek and Russian encyclopaedic works most often give 1703–1704, while some lists place it in 1705–1706 or in a wider span.
Musa Khan struck coins in his own name. According to the sources, his influence extended to Merv and Astrabad, whose inhabitants paid him the jizya and kharaj taxes.
Later the khan came into conflict with the amirs of Khorezm. He fled to Merv and was killed there around 1704.
He was succeeded by Yadigar Khan, a son of Haji Muhammad Khan, who by most accounts ruled from 1704 to 1714, after which Shir Ghazi became khan of Khiva. Little has survived about Musa Khan’s time, so dates and details differ from source to source.
