Rashid Malikov

Rashid Karimovich Malikov was born on 3 July 1958 in Moscow. He is an Uzbekistani film director, screenwriter and actor. He came into cinema as an actor: in 1979 he played Nartay in “Duel under the Plane Tree” and the lead in “Horses under the Moon” the same year. He also appeared in “The Girl from the Legend” (1980), “The Revolt of the Daughters-in-Law” (1985), “Zero Option” (1992) and “Peshiy” (1997).

He studied at the Tashkent Medical Institute in 1975–1980, then changed course and studied directing at VGIK in 1981–1986 in Yuri Ozerov's workshop. In 1993 he completed the “Film in USA” training programme in the United States.

His first feature as a director, “Klinika”, followed in 1987, from his own script. Later work includes “Neveroyatnyy sluchay” (1989), “Polunochnyy blyuz” (1991), “Tayna paporotnikov” (1992), “Peshiy” (1997), “Utrenniy veter” (2009), “Zhenskiy den” (2013) and “Dyadya” (2014). He made films at studios in Uzbekistan, Russia and Tajikistan.

“Dyadya” shared the Grand Prix of the 9th “V kruge semi” international theatre and film festival in Irkutsk in 2014. “Sabot” (2018) screened in the main programme of the 40th Moscow International Film Festival and received the prize of the guild of film scholars and critics of the Russian Union of Cinematographers. “Tutqunlik” (2021) won the Grand Prix of the feature competition at the Volokolamsk Frontier military-patriotic film festival in November 2021.

Malikov is a member of the Union of Cinematographers of Russia and the Guild of Film Directors of Russia, and teaches directing and screenwriting. In August 2022 he was awarded the Order of Friendship (“Do'stlik”) by decree of the President of Uzbekistan.
