Biography
Sayyor is the pen name of Sayyorpulat Fayzullaev. He was born in Tashkent in 1932 and wrote both poetry and prose.
His first poem was published in 1953, and his first book, “The Warmth of the Heart” (Qalb harorati), appeared in 1960. A year later came the narrative poem “The Headless Statue” (Boshsiz haykal), which, according to literary sources, stirred wide discussion in the 1960s.
Collections of verse and prose followed regularly over the next decades: “I Am Thirty” (O'ttiz yoshim, 1968), “Drops from the Sea” (Dengizdan tomchilar, 1972), “A Clear Season” (Musaffo fasl, 1978), “The Crossroads” (Chorraha, 1985), “Song of Life” (Umr qo'shig'i, 1986), and “Honesty and Activity” (Halollik va faollik) and “The Stone in Sleep” (Uyqudagi tosh), both of 1989. Some of his works were written for children. In all, about thirty of his books were published in Uzbek, Russian and other languages.
In Sayyor's poetry civic themes stand beside love lyrics. Conscience, honesty and duty to one's people and country recur throughout his books.
His wife was the poet Gulchehra Jo'rayeva. Sayyor died in 2001 after a serious illness.
