Biography
Gulchehra Jurayeva was born on 1 February 1937 in the village of Durmon in the Shofirkon district of the Bukhara region, into an educated family. She finished secondary school in Bukhara in 1954 and went to Tashkent to study journalism at the Central Asian State University (later Tashkent State University, now the National University of Uzbekistan), graduating in 1959.
She began her career in newspapers and worked for more than ten years at the paper O'zbekiston madaniyati (“Culture of Uzbekistan”). She then worked at the magazine Yoshlik (1982) and at the Women's Committee of Uzbekistan (1991), and in 1996–1997 served as a literary adviser to the Writers' Union of Uzbekistan.
Her writing began in the 1950s: her first poem appeared in print in 1954 and her first book of verse, Baxtim borki… (roughly “I am fortunate that…”), in 1961. Collections followed, among them Bog'imda bahor (1968), Gul shaydosi (1969), Hayajon (1971), Umr — daryo (“Life Is a River”, 1974), Salom, do'stlar (1975), Eng yaqin yulduz (1979), Dostonlar (1981), Iqbol (1983) and Mehrim sizniki (1984).
She also wrote prose; the novellas Chavandoz (“The Horseman”), Imtihon (“The Exam”) and Zuhro yulduzi (“The Star Zuhro”) are hers. In 1987 a volume of poems and novellas, Gulshanaro, was published. After independence she brought out Yillarim — yo'llarim (2000), Seni sevaman, hayot and the selected works Saylanma (2009); in all, more than twenty collections of poems and novellas have reached readers.
In 1992 she was given the title Honoured Worker of Culture of Uzbekistan, and she has also been awarded the Order Mehnat shuhrati (“Labour Glory”).
