Biography

Yormat Tojiyev (Tojiev) was born in 1940 in the village of Rafqon in the Beshariq district of the Fergana region. In 1962 he was admitted to the philological faculty of Tashkent State University (now the National University of Uzbekistan) and, after graduating, stayed on to work at the university.

From 1967 he worked in the department of Uzbek linguistics as a lecturer, docent, professor and head of department; he is now a professor of that department. The department was led by Ayyub Gulomov, a founder of Uzbek linguistics, whose pupil Tojiyev was.

In 1974, under Gulomov’s supervision, he defended his candidate’s dissertation on the synonymy of affixes that express possession and non-possession of the subject. In 1992 his doctoral dissertation, “Affixal Synonymy in the Uzbek Language”, earned him the degree of Doctor of Philological Sciences.

His research deals with the relations between word, root and stem, the phonetic structure of root morphemes, affixal morphemes and their formation, form-building morphemes, and the polysemy, homonymy and synonymy of affixes. His biography lists more than 10 monographs and textbooks, over 20 programmes and teaching materials, and more than 100 scholarly articles.

Several doctors and more than ten candidates of science defended their dissertations under his supervision, and he was the official opponent for more than 30 dissertation authors. He holds the title Honoured Worker of Public Education of Uzbekistan. In 2020 the National University of Uzbekistan held a republican scientific conference, “Problems of Improving Philological Education”, dedicated to his 80th birthday.
