Bakhtiyar Ibragimov
Uzbek scientist in supramolecular chemistry, Doctor of Chemical Sciences, professor and academician; Vice-President of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan since 2018, known for his work on gossypol inclusion compounds.
Biography
Bakhtiyar Tulaganovich Ibragimov was born on 11 May 1949 in Tashkent into a working-class family. He studied at Leningrad State University and graduated in 1973.
After the university he worked at the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan as an intern researcher and then a junior, senior and leading research fellow.
His field is supramolecular chemistry, above all host–guest inclusion compounds. He studied by X-ray diffraction the inclusion complexes of the natural product gossypol, and his papers on the subject have appeared since the late 1980s. In articles of 1999 and 2007 he put forward a rule linking the structures of different crystal modifications of one host–guest complex to their crystallization temperatures, also called the “Ibragimov rule”.
He is a Doctor of Chemical Sciences and a professor, the author of more than 300 scientific works, including three monographs and ten inventions, and has trained three doctors and twelve candidates of science.
From 2003 to 2017 he was Chief Scientific Secretary of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan. On 29 December 2017 a presidential decree elected him a full member (academician) of the Academy, and since 2018 he has been its Vice-President for chemical and biological sciences.
His honours include the badge “10th Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Uzbekistan” (2001), the Order “Mehnat shuhrati” (2007), the Order “Do‘stlik” (decree of 27 August 2020) and the badge “30th Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Uzbekistan” (2021).
