Biography
Fazyl Fayzrakhmanovich Amirov was born on 26 January 1914 in Bukhara. He graduated from the Tashkent Medical Institute in 1938, and the institute remained the centre of his scientific and teaching career.
During the Second World War he served as a surgeon. In 1943 he was the leading surgeon of an evacuation hospital and received the Order of the Red Star; in 1944–1946, as the leading surgeon of an army, he took part in the liberation of Hungary and Romania. After the war he combined clinical work with research and administration at the institute: from 1947 to 1957 he was deputy dean of the medical and dental faculties, and from 1959 to 1967 vice-rector for research. In 1949 he defended a candidate’s dissertation on open pneumothorax and the action of vagosympathetic block, and in 1959 a doctoral thesis on the repair of bronchial defects in experiment; he was confirmed as Doctor of Medical Sciences in 1960 and as professor in 1961.
From 1966 to 1979 Amirov headed the department of operative surgery and topographic anatomy at the Tashkent Medical Institute. His main field was surgery of the airways: reconstructive and restorative operations on the trachea and bronchi, and anaesthesia for them. He wrote 143 scientific papers, and his monograph “Plastic Surgery of the Trachea and Bronchi” (1962) was praised by leading Soviet surgeons, among them A. P. Bakulev, B. V. Petrovsky and A. A. Vishnevsky.
In 1971 Amirov was named Honoured Science Worker of the Uzbek SSR, and in 1974 he received the USSR State Prize for developing operations on the trachea and bronchi and introducing them into clinical practice. He spoke at international conferences in London (1959), Rome (1960) and Berlin (1966); six doctoral dissertations were defended under his supervision.
