Biography

Ziyovuddinkhan Haziniy to'ra, known in literature as Haziniy Khoqandiy, was born in 1867 in the village of Katta Kenagas near Kokand (now in the Uchkuprik district of the Fergana region). His father, Doniyolkhan, was known as Katta Khoja.

He studied at the Jome Madrasa in Kokand, mastering the Qur'an, tafsir, hadith, fiqh, kalam and literature, and followed Sufi teaching systematically. At about thirty he received irshad from his master, the licence to guide followers on the Sufi path, and was recognised as a sheikh of the Qadiriyya order. People called him “Haziniy to'ra” and “Eshonbuva”, and in the Fergana Valley he was also known as “Murshidi Farg'ona”, the guide of Fergana.

The sheikh lived by farming, planting orchards and having buildings put up. He also wrote poetry: ghazals, murabba', muxammas and musaddas, some four thousand lines in all. Alongside their Sufi content, his verses praise purity, humanity and generosity.

His poems entered many manuscript bayoz anthologies copied in the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Between 1910 and 1915 several Tashkent printing houses published the collection “Bayozi Haziniy” repeatedly, and other poets wrote muxammas and replies (nazira) on more than ten of his ghazals.

Haziniy died in 1923, aged 56, and was buried in his native village. The mausoleum over his grave and the surrounding buildings are protected by the state as an architectural monument. Because of the religious, Sufi spirit of his verse, his legacy was hardly studied before independence; since 1992 his anniversaries have been marked at regional level, and Kenagas has a house-museum devoted to him.
