Biography

Shavkat Rahmatullayev was born in Tashkent on 15 March 1926. In 1947 he graduated from the philology faculty of Central Asian State University, now the National University of Uzbekistan.

He defended his candidate dissertation in 1952 and his doctoral dissertation in 1966. His research covered the phraseology, lexicology, morphology, orthography and lexicography of the Uzbek language, and he wrote more than 200 scholarly and methodological works.

His name is linked above all with dictionaries: the explanatory phraseological dictionary of Uzbek appeared in 1978, followed by explanatory dictionaries of antonyms and homonyms and an etymological dictionary. Researchers describe him as the founder of Uzbek phraseology. He also wrote the textbook “Modern Literary Uzbek”.

In 1968 he took an active part in setting up the university’s department of general linguistics, today the department of language theory and practice. He repeatedly spoke at international conferences and symposia.

In 1990 he received the “Veteran of Labour” medal and the honorary title of Honoured Worker of Public Education of the Uzbek SSR; in 1996 Tashkent State University gave him its badge “For Outstanding Services”. By a presidential decree of 24 August 2005 he was awarded the Order “Buyuk xizmatlari uchun” (For Outstanding Merit).

Shavkat Rahmatullayev died on 26 June 2015.
