Biography

Xayriddin Saloh (born Salohiddinov) was born on 15 January 1934 in Tashkent. He took to poetry while still at school, and in the early 1950s joined the literary circle led by the poet G'ayratiy, where he studied alongside the young poets Erkin Vohidov, Yusuf Shomansur and Sayyor.

His first poem appeared in print in 1950. In 1957 his mentor Mirtemir published three of his poems in a newspaper: “Niyat buloqlari”, “Ko'li Qubbon” and “Olma”. The same year Saloh graduated from the Tashkent State Pedagogical Institute and began work as a literary staff member at newspaper and magazine offices: at the newspaper “O'zbekiston madaniyati” in 1963–1966 and at the magazine “Gulxan” in 1968–1969; some sources also name the magazine “G'uncha”.

His first collection, “Chashma”, came out at the end of the 1950s (sources give 1958 or 1959). In the 1960s followed “Ikkinchi imtihon” (1961), “Ishqim va rashkim” (1965) and “Tug'yon” (1969). He wrote the narrative poem “Toshkent bilan suhbat”, devoted to the 1966 Tashkent earthquake, as well as “Na'matak”, “Laylo” and “Yangroq hayot”, about the life of the folk poet Sulton Jo'ra; these poems are counted among the achievements of Uzbek poetry of the 1960s.

Saloh also translated into Uzbek poems by Byron, Pushkin, Lermontov, Shevchenko and Rasul Hamzatov; his versions of Heinrich Heine's lyrics were especially well known.

Xayriddin Saloh died in 1969, aged 35. Books published after his death include “Izlar va hislar” (1974), “Shu'lalar qo'shig'i” (1975) and “Lirika” (1985).
